hair
(I will talk more about the hairstyle in the next part, but it is also a part of the face so yeah~)
Of course (if you're familiar with Kpop) you know that there are idols with other, brighter hair colors, but generally the darker you're hair, the more Korean-like you will look, at least this is what I think.
I just find that dark or black hair does meet with the core of a typical ulzzang appearance more than colorful hair. Dark hair also enhances your face and makes it appear whiter.
As I said, you can go for blonde, etc (remember you can neglect a few things), but if you're unsure about the success of your transformation, etc, black is the best color.
If you absolutely want to dye, but not blonde, the more decent and darker the color you chose, the better it is. That is because blonde/ bright brown hair does dilute your apperance into the Japanese direction or into something undefined pretty fast and before you look quite ulzzang-ish I think it's to risky to be fancy schmancy with hair colors.
I also think that nearly all ulzzangs still have black hair.

Shape
When talking about the things that Koreans and Korean wanna-bes alike crave for the most one must mention v-line or egg-shape.
It is maybe the most important and crucial point of the perfect face: both of these expression describe the ideal face shape which should be narrowing down towards the chin in a v-shaped contour. And many many plastic surgeries are done to bring the naturally squarish or round Asian face into a slimmer form.
Why the v-line? As opposed to many other features it doesn't make you look younger, but actually older if anything. But a wide face gives a less elegant, less feminine and less delicate air. It appears to be more masculine and tough and just looks rougher than a petite face. -
Complexion
Koreans are extremely obsessed about natural, clean, bright, glowy skin. You haven't seen an ulzzang with pimples, redness, etc right?
Blemish-free and particularly white skin have been playing a big role in the ulzzang scene for a long time. Even among small children it can happen that on is bullied by the other for being dark skinned. So it's no wonder that most idols are very fair, too. Those who are more tanned, like Hyori, are not really judged with the same standard as other, typical K-pop stars.
Lately, a big trend is the dewy complexion, very glowy, almost to the point when it looks as if you're sweating. -
Forehead
Asians all more or less want to looks cute (Koreans not as much as Japanese).
And what could be cuter than a high and outwards curved forehead?
Ever looked at babies?
Everything about them is more round, the whole features of their head, etc.
Especially their forehead!
It's very high and curved. It should also be not wide, but also getting more narrow towards the hairline.
This is actually an underrated but very crucial part of a beautiful ulzzang face. -
eyebrows
I think one of the most important part of your face are the eyebrows. Many people tend to think that the eyes are the most important part or that lips play a very big role in your appearance, but they never think about the eyebrows.
That is wrong, and many beauty gurus seem to agree with me as you almost never see them without having done their eyebrows, even in make-up tutorials, where they start with a bare face.
Asians tend to have very sparse eyebrows which make us appear tired and harsh somehow and less feminine.
The shape of the eyebrows also contributes a lot to your look. A set of straight and fuller eyebrows like the Korean variant creates a more girly, sophisticated and youthful look than arched, thinner eyebrows like Angeline Jolie's.
So ulzzangs have rather straight to absolutely straight eyebrows with no arch, they only go downwards towards the end of the eye.
The hairs near the nose are often teased towards the nose and are less dense than at the end.
Here's a comparison of Western and Korean eyebrows done by the awesome QiuQiu of Bon QiuQiu:
Kate Moss
Megan Fox
with cheek fillers
see how the thin and arched eyebrows make her look very sexy an fierce while the Korean eyebrows just make her look innocent and easy to cheat on Haha
Angeline Jolie
with nose-job (to get her the nicely curved Korea nose) and fat-grafting on forehead, under cheekbones and chin.
it doesn't really suit her, but at second glance she looks younger after the fat-grafting and with the eyebrows and the nose is pure win!
On to some Asian examples:
Sammi Cheng
with botox/ V-Line jaw surgery and chin implant
Stefanie Sun
with fat-grafting, filled off zygoma (cheekbone reduction on the left) and chin job
Stefanie Sun
with fat grafting and chin job
Faye Wong
V-Line jaw contouring and zygoma filed off and a nose job and fat-grafting
As you can see it makes quite difference whether your face is very angular or smooth. An angular face makes you look older and more masculine, while a smooth and less bony face is more youthful (compare with how babies look). That is also why people get fillers at areas where the face is sunken in to level it with protruding areas. -
eyes
Shape
The are not especially big or round.
Instead I have the feeling that Koreans seem to like longer eyes (thus their eye make-up will always have a winged eyeline).
Of course there are some ulzzangs, who are more baby-ish than others. Their eyes are often rounder, but generally ulzzangs sport long eyes which are sometimes slanted downwards to create the puppy look.Double Eyelids
Of course double eyelids.
And here, there are different kinds of double eyelids.
The nicest one is when the skin fold (that forms the double eyelid wtf... dunno how it's called) is quite far away from the eye and doesn't merge with the end of your lids at the inner corner of your eye, i.e. parallel double eyelids (not tapered).
There are of course idols (not so much ulzzangs though, correct me if I'm wrong) who are still popular although they don't have double eyelids, like CL.
Without wanting to demoralize anyone, I wouldn't say that they are as respected as say Girls' Generation for their beauty, but they are rather famous for their non-compliant-ness, not to say ugliness. They will always be the girls who is pretty, although she has a monolid and not the girl, who is pretty. Koreans or Asians are rather radical in their thinking so anything that is not 100% like the best is hardly accepted by the majority; i.e. the Asian parent that will only accept 1,0 grade and not 1,1.Lashes
All Asians are somehow crazy over lashes (ever noticed that retarded movement of girl groups where they strike their imaginary lashes? this dance move is the Made in Korea for sure), it's because we don't have any!
And all other races have like super duper thick long lashes!
Still, and this is sort of important to me, Koreans emphasize the natural, less dramatic beauty as opposed to Japanese. So they don't apply crazy thick fake lashes like gyarus, but if they wear fake ones they still look very natural.
As mentioned before, they like it pure and natural.Colour
Although colour contact lenses become more and more popular these days, most ulzzang seem to stick with their natural eye color which is either dark brown or black.
If they or idols wear coloured ones it's mostly only for special occasions, such as photo shootings or performances, so I don't think it's really a Korean thing to wear blue circle lenses, etc.Aegyo sal
Koreans naturally have remarkable puffy undereyes, this part below your eyes is called aegyo sal or love band. If you haven't notice yet, just watch whatever MV you want. Men as women have these, especially when they smile.
Many people who are not so familiar with the topic still seem to confuse them with eyebags/ dark circles or call aegyo sal eyebags, but these two are completely different things.
Eyebags are often saggy and can be very big, they also have another colour than the rest of your facial skin, mostly they are darker thus looking kind of unhealthy.
Aegyo sal are smaller and right below your lashline. They don't have any discolouration at all.
So why are they so popular?
Firstly, they act like a double eyelid below your eyes, so they enlarge the eyes optically.
And they make your face appear cuter and more childish and friendly, especially when you smile.

cheeks
While in Western cultures high and defined cheekbones are very desirable it is not so in Korea. I have explained that while talking about the eyebrows, but once again, the more bone structure appears in your face, the older you will look as only grown up people have very defined and angular faces not young ones.
Also according to Disney a triangular face (i.e. very protruding cheekbones) make you look like a villain.
So Korean cheeks are full, but not in a way that they make your face wider, they are just not sunken-in.

nose
Thin, Sharp, Small.
High too, but not too much (as Western people).
Koreans have very harmonic noses, that means the height, angle, curve, etc of the nose look very coherent with their face
Asians have rather big, flat, fleshy, mushroom-ish noses, so like with the V-shape, they want the opposite of what they have.
That's it.
In my opinion, the most important parts about the face are:
the complexion.
the V-shape (not so important I think, because you face can still looks slim if it's not like a V, but since Koreans are so fanatic about it)
the eyebrows
the nose
Other parts like brows, forehead, and even eyes is not that important.
You might think that you need double eyelids, but they are easily to cheat and you can easily use make-up to make them appear bigger!
Thank you very much for this post. :)))
ReplyDeleteIt helps me a lot to understand the koreans.
you're welcome!
ReplyDeleteis it possible to have it all naturaly?
ReplyDeleteThank you for the infos..I'm very much interested in the different ideal beauties of every countries, this helped me :) thanks again!
there are really different kind of humans and Asians, so yes some are very lucky and pretty much look like that I guess
ReplyDeletebut if you don't look like that and you naturally want to change your features... I guess it is close to impossible to naturally change the shape of your nose etc... I know that there are tools to slim down your chin, etc but I doubt that they are really effective
anw, I wrote another entry about how to achieve those looks u might want to check it out, but to make it short: no it isn't xD
I'm a bit confused.. I've heard that Koreans typically prefer small heads.. does this mean a smaller head or high (large) forehead is preferred (so one or the other)?
ReplyDeletesmall head means it's not wide, but narrow, especially the chin! (v-shape)
ReplyDeleteand they also like a high (and round) forehead
also a longer face (high forehead) makes your entire face appear slimmer
so they prefer both !^^ hope that makes it clear !^^
how can i can they hide theyre forehead cos i have a big one :(((
ReplyDeletebig forehead is good!!!
Deletehonestly I've seen the biggest foreheads on ulzzangs, means it's really desireable ㅋㅋ
Srsly? In my country they hated that' always when the bully me :( But youknow, knowing this makes me a bit happier
DeleteKoreans actually get forehead implants or fillers to make it bigger and rounder ㅋㅋㅋ
Deletedon't let anyone get you down for something that's not your 'fault'! ppl who bully others for their features are stupid and underdeveloped, it shouldn't affect you!
I'd also like to add that aeygo-sal isn't super popular in Korea. Sure, some people like it, but it isn't really anything to be sought after (I'm Korean).
ReplyDeleteheys,
DeleteI don't want to sound like a smartass, but as there exist plastic surgery to get aegyo-sal and some people draw them on, so I guess people are somewhat desperate for them?
and I think most ulzzang/ idols have them? so it's kinda 'characteristic' (at least for ulzzangs) (correct me if I'm wrong) so at least in the ulzzang/k-pop world it is quite safe to say that they are desirable.
I do realize that not all Koreans want them or don't care about such stuff at all (as much as there are Koreans who can't be bothered to listen to K-pop), so when I say 'Koreans' I just do it to avoid repeating 'ulzzangs', etc all the time.
But thanks for your comments, I will keep your thoughts in mind for future posts!!
Is there any other way to get a v-line face shape? I think I'd have v-line face shape if my jaws weren't so box-y >_>
ReplyDelete(Kinda not related, but I just realized that Maleficent has Voldy's nose)
Hahaha she practically has no nose now that you say it!
Deletealas! the jaws are always the problem haha
erm if the shape of your jaws is mainly caused by your masticatory muscle (the own you use to chew) then having botox injections right there will help.
The botox will paralyse (?) the muslce, thus it won't work so much anymore and eventually will shrink down (imagine it like you had some really strong arm muscles, and then suddenly stop werking it, the muscle will shrink, cause it's not working anymore).
Of course you can still chew~
If it's your bown structure that causes the square shape then you have to get jaw-shaving plastic surgery....
